Sensei's Daily Encouragement - 01 June 2013 - Year of Victory for a Youthful SGI

Daily Encouragement by Daisaku Ikeda

A coward cannot become a Buddha. We cannot attain Buddhahood unless we possess the heart of a lion. The harsher the situation, the bolder the stand we must take. This is the essence of the Soka Gakkai spirit.

The heart of the Buddha's lifetime of teachings is the Lotus Sutra, and the heart of the practice of the Lotus Sutra is found in the "Never Disparaging" chapter. What does Bodhisattva Never Disparaging's profound respect for people signify? The purpose of the appearance in this world of Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, lies in his behaviour as a human being.

Wisdom for Modern Life by Daisaku Ikeda

The gratification of desires is not happiness.Genuine happiness can only be achieved when we transform our way of life from the unthinking pursuit of pleasure to one committed to enriching our inner lives, when we focus on "being more" rather than simply having more.

Excerpt from Daisaku Ikeda - A Youthful Diary (30 October 1949 p14)

Lots of sleep last night.  Got up at 9:00...
Chanted vigorous daimoku.  Played with my niece till lunch.  Lovable children are like oases in our lives.
If everyone really were to care about these precious children, I think that in itself would automatically put a brake on war.
