Likewise, the attainment of Buddhahood of the child guarantees the attainment of Buddhahood of the parents. One lighthouse illuminates the way for many ships to steer a course safely through uncertain waters. In the same way, people with strong and committed faith shine as beacons of hope for their family and relatives.

 In the end it is nothing other than the loving kindness with which the woman cares for her child that makes the difference. An earnest, dedicated spirit shines like a diamond and moves people's hearts. That is because a brilliant flame burns within. If we are sincere, people will understand our intentions, and our positive qualities will shine forth. It is pointless to be caught up in outward appearances. The German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe writes: "How may one get to know oneself? Never by contemplation,only , indeed, by action. Seek to do your duty, and you will know at once how it is with you."

It is not the responsibility of general members. Leaders' faith and growth determine the entire organization's development."

The German writer Friedrich von Schiller writes, "The brave man thinks upon himself the last." This is analogous to the spirit of not begrudging one's life taught in the Lotus Sutra. This means treasuring the Law more highly than one's life. The Law and kosen-rufu are central.

According to Buddhism, health is not a condition in which we merely escape negative influences. It is a highly positive, active state in which we hold ourselves responsible for such influences, in which we face and try to solve various problems - not just our own but others problems, too. The word disease implies a lack of ease, which conversely implies that health is a state of comfort. In the Buddhist sense, however, being "at ease" does not mean freedom from difficulties, it means having the strength to meet and overcome any problem.

Without courage we cannot be compassionate. Courage and compassion are inseparable, like the two sides of a coin. Faith is the wellspring of courage. A cowardly person cannot realize victory in life. Unless we have the courage to really dedicate our lives to kosen-rufu, we cannot construct true happiness for ourselves and others.

But we should not be swayed every time such phenomena arise, for it is already certain that we will become happy in the end. We should regard as training everything that happens to us in our practice to reach the destination of happiness.

Life is full of unexpected suffering. Even so, as Eleanor Roosevelt says: "If you can live through that [a difficult situation] you can live through anything. You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along." That's exactly right. Struggling against great difficulty enables us to develop ourselves tremendously. We can call forth and manifest those abilities lying dormant within us. Difficulty can be a source of dynamic new growth and positive progress.

Though lacking in knowledge of Buddhism, a person of faith, even if dull-witted, is to be reckoned as a person of correct views. But even though one has some knowledge of Buddhism, if one is without faith, then one is to be considered a slanderer and an icchantika, or person of incorrigible disbelief.

Courage substitutes for compassion. I am speaking of the courage to save others from suffering. To practice Buddhism with courage translates into compassion."

Our voices reflect the state of our bodies and minds. Our speech reveals the power of our lives. The voice is important. Ancient texts speak of demons and evil spirits that devour people's voices. I believe such (vocal) problems cannot be solved by medicine alone. I think they are problems of our entire being.

Had a fever all day. A daily battle against the devil of illness. Decided to reread Collected Works of George A. Gamow. Transcending my past preconceptions about Buddhism, I steadily realize the greatness of this Buddhism of sowing.
 
As my mentor always says, "The more science advances, the easier it will be to prove the profound significance of this great Buddhism."

Because life is long, you should not be impatient. What matters most is that you embrace the Gohonzon throughout your life. It is vitally important to continually challenge yourself to chant even a little more daimoku and to pray before the Gohonzon for the fulfillment of your desires.

Here I will make a great vow. Though I might be offered the rulership of Japan if I would only abandon the Lotus Sutra, accept the teachings of the Meditation Sutra, and look forward to rebirth in the Pure Land, though I might be told that my father and mother will have their heads cut off if I do not recite the Nembutsu, whatever obstacles I might encounter, so long as persons of wisdom do not prove my teachings to be false, I will never yield! All other troubles are no more to me than dust before the wind.

 Wisdom for Modern Life by Daisaku Ikeda

 First of all, as to the question of where exactly hell and the Buddha exist, one sutra states that hell exists underground, and another sutra says that the Buddha is in the west. Closer examination, however, reveals that both exist in our five-foot body. This must be true because hell is in the heart of a person who inwardly despises his father and disregards his mother. It is like the lotus seed, which contains both blossom and fruit. In the same way, the Buddha dwells within our hearts - Nichiren

 The general director stopped by in the morning. He brought his dog with him. Left for Sensei's house in Meguro at 8:00. He talked with us for about an hour. Reported on yesterday's general meeting and other matters. Sensei treated us to strawberries. 
 He said, "Daisaku, I want to fight for the next seven years until we attain a membership of two million households." "I will fight resolutely, with a hundred times the courage," I replied. 
 Nevertheless, in the depths of my life I feel a hint of loneliness. My sadness will not disappear. How long will Sensei live? What is his condition? Ah, how distressing. How miserable. How terribly regrettable. Sensei, I know. I do.

 If I remain silent, I may escape persecutions in this lifetime, but in my next life I will most certainly fall into the hell of incessant suffering. While controlling your mind, which is at once both extremely subtle and solemnly profound, you should strive to elevate your faith with freshness and vigour. When you do so, both your life and your surroundings will open wide before you and every action you take will become a source of benefit. Understanding the subtle workings of one's mind is the key to faith and attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime.

On the evening of the 14th, attended a meeting in Yoshihara City in Shizuoka Prefecture – a group of members connected with Bunkyo Chapter. No spirit or vigor. Need to dispatch a capable leader to this area.Returned home late at night. My wife waited up for me, sewing.A beautiful night. Want to build a family vulnerable to no one, dependent upon no one.Yes! Will advance tomorrow again, even if only an inch or two.
