 Money serves various purposes according to our needs. The same is true of the Lotus Sutra. It will be a lantern in the dark or a boat at a crossing. At times it will be water, and at other times, fire. This being so, the Lotus Sutra assures us of "peace and security in this life and good circumstances in the next."

There is an expansive life-state of profound, secure happiness that transcends any material or social advantage. It is called faith; it is called the life-state of Buddhahood. As Nichiren reminds us: "It is the heart that is important." It is in the heart of faith that Buddhahood resides and boundless and immeasurable happiness shines forth. Happiness is not something located far away. We must realize that it exists within our own lives. Nichiren Buddhism teaches this and shows us how to attain indestructible happiness

Want to do the kind of gongyo, morning and evening, in which I can practice the profound meditation of the Lotus Sutra. Reflecting deeply upon my life, which lacks the power of concentration. There are times I feel impelled to cross the oceans, soaring into the air to boldly advance global kosen-rufu – traveling to the mysterious developing nations of Southeast Asia; to the advanced civilization of America; to the tumultuous, newly developing communist countries; to the Christian democracies of Europe; to Africa and South America – the continents of the twenty-first century; and to Australia, the land of the future. Dreams! Never die!

Buddhism teaches that being led astray by evil friends, (negative influences) is to be feared more than being killed by a mad elephant. A mad elephant can only destroy our physical body, but evil friends, if we allow ourselves to be influenced by them, will drag us down into a state of hell.

Buddhism enables you to adorn the final chapter of your life with brilliant success, just as the golden sun colours the sky in glorious crimson hues and beams of sublime light. To do so, you need to keep making efforts year after year and winning year after year.

 The present time corresponds to the first five hundred years of the Latter Day of the Law. Passages of the sutra clearly state that at this time Bodhisattva Superior Practices will appear and bestow the five characters of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo on all the people of Japan. And they reveal that he will face exile and execution. I am also like the envoy of Bodhisattva Superior Practices because I spread this doctrine.

 Reply To The Lay Priest Takahashi

Nichiren Daishonin wrote this letter in 1275 at Minobu to the lay priest Takahashi Rokuro Hyoe. Takahashi's wife was the aunt of Nikko Shonin, and it was through this connection that he had been converted to the Daishonin's teaching.

 Dialogue is a positive endeavour. It builds solidarity and creates unity. To reject others only has negative repercussions. It invites division and leads to destruction. The point is to meet and to talk. It is only natural that our perspective may at times differ from that of others. But dialogue gives rise to trust, even among those who don't see eye to eye.

Nichiren Daishonin writes, "If you light a lantern for another, it will also brighten your own way" (Gosho Zenshu, p. 1598). Please be confident that the higher your flame of altruistic action burns, the more its light will suffuse your life with happiness. Those who possess an altruistic spirit are the happiest people of all.

All these things I have done solely in order to repay the debt I owe to my parents, the debt I owe to my teacher, the debt I owe to the three treasures of Buddhism, and the debt I owe to my country. For their sake I have been willing to destroy my body and to give up my life, though as it turns out, I have not been put to death after all.

Written in 1276, Nichiren Daishonin wrote this treatise to express his gratitude to Dozen-bo and sent it to Joken-bo and Gijo-bo, senior priests at the time.

Another fine day. Happy. Rested through the morning – read. Various thoughts about the future arise like gathering clouds. At 2:00, lectured on the latter portion of "The Teaching Affirmed by All Buddhas Throughout Time" at I.'s. Though incapable, I gave it my all. In the evening, attended Shigi Chapter's first meeting of the year. Gave guidance sincerely. There are times I hope for people's happiness and other time that feeling does not arise. Strange, the common mortal's mind.

Heard a report from the secretary's office that Sensei is in poor health. Concerned. Was told he will be staying home for two or three days to recuperate. This is what I want him to do. The fatigue of this tumultuous year has finally shown itself. Sensei is ill and I am, too. It's frustrating. Why are others, both within and outside the Gakkai, so healthy? Had been concerned about my year-end finances, but mysteriously, it seems we somehow had enough to see us through until the New Year. It is an inconspicuous benefit.
