A higher religion does not negate rationality. No religion that suppresses human reason can earn the trust of humankind. Buddhism, the "religion of wisdom," is an extremely rational religion. In fact, it is so rational that many Westerners even question whether it can be classified as a religion, since it does not teach the existence of a supreme being in the image of humankind.

How then do we manifest the brain's full creative powers? There is only one way to bring out our full intellectual capacity: by constantly putting our minds to work.

It may seem perfectly all right to put ourselves and our own wishes first, to simply follow the dictates of our emotions and cravings, but the truth is that there is nothing more unreliable than our own mind. Life doesn't always go like clockwork and things will not necessarily turn out as we hope or plan. Consequently, Nichiren frequently stressed: "You should become the master of your mind, not let your mind master you." We mustn't allow ourselves to be ruled by a self-centered mind. Rather, we have to discipline our mind and gain mastery over it.

It means having the wisdom and perception to actually move things in a positive direction by seeing things in their best light, while all the time keeping our eyes firmly focused on reality.

Attended a private funeral service for Nichiko Hori. High priest Nichijun led gongyo at 1:00pm at Sessen Manor. At 2:00, the casket was brought out.
His sublime countenance at death is that of a great philosopher of this century who, throughout his ninety-one years, devoted himself to an exhaustive study of the profound principles of this great Buddhism. Boundlessly moved. It is clear-cut proof of the power of Buddhism. We recently bid farewell to Nissho, and now we pay our last respects to Nichiko. It's as if the grand stage is changing in preparation for kosen-rufu. I have one request (of Nichiko): that you continue to encourage and guide me until the day of kosen-rufu, and when I die, that you will take my childish hand and welcome me.

(Oda Nobunaga was the initiator of the unification of Japan under the shogunate in the late 16th century, which ruled Japan until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. His work was continued, completed and finalized by his successors Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu.)

Those who have this sense of satisfaction even if they are extremely busy are much happier than those who have time on their hands but feel empty inside.

"As an emissary of the Gohonzon, I cannot cancel something I have agreed upon. As a man, I must go, even if it kills me. Isn't this, Daisaku, what is meant by genuine faith?"
My tears flow at his strict guidance.
"The high priest is coming, and four thousand members will be waiting. Dai, even if it kills me, you must let me go. If I die, then take care of things with everybody afterward. If I return alive, then, with a fresh determination, we'll create a new organization. What happens next depends only on the Buddha's wisdom."

It is important to take a long-range view. No great achievement is accomplished overnight or without difficulty. Because it isn't easy to get into a highly-ranked school, students study with all their might, gaining an abundance of knowledge and ability. Faith follows basically the same formula: Practice is essential to attaining Buddhahood.

The Sanskrit word buddha means "One who is awakened [to the truth]." While the term was widely employed by various schools of the time, it eventually came to be used exclusively in reference to Shakyamuni. At the same time, the word buddha implies "to bloom." A person who causes flowers of lofty character to brilliantly bloom and who bears the fruits of good fortune and benefit in abundance is a Buddha. Such a person manifests the benefit of the Law and shines with character overflowing with blessings.

The important thing, however, is not to spin out of the orbit of faith. I hope you will continue to pursue the path of Buddhahood steadily and patiently, encouraging one another on your journey.

The role of leaders is important. Everything is determined by the leaders behaviour. There is a passage in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms that says only those who possess genuine wisdom and virtue win the highest regard from people. It all comes down to you. You have to polish and develop yourselves. Should there be a leader or leaders in faith whom you do not like, all you have to do is determine not to become like them. All you have to do is decide that you will become leaders who will make everyone feel comfortable and at ease.

To do things that others find strange and unnatural, that run counter to common sense—such actions go against the basic tenets of Buddhism and amount to slander of the Law.

You must never think that any of the eighty thousand sacred teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha's lifetime or any of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas of the ten directions and three existences are outside yourself. Your practice of the Buddhist teachings will not relieve you of the sufferings of birth and death in the least unless you perceive the true nature of your life. If you seek enlightenment outside yourself, then your performing even ten thousand practices and ten thousand good deeds will be in vain. It is like the case of a poor man who spends night and day counting his neighbor's wealth but gains not even half a coin. -Nichiren

Was severely admonished by Sensei in the morning. Confucius said, "nine thoughts to one word," but I haven't been putting this into practice. Had better watch myself.
 
At 12:10, the ceremony to bring out the casket was held in the Reception Hall. Then, the main funeral ceremony was held before the Sutra Repository. Was moved by the service, which lasted more than two hours and was held in accord with ancient tradition.
 
Heartbroken to see Sensei and his wife in tears, purely bidding their final farewell to Nissho….
Oh, how things change. Common mortal reflect the general principle that all is transient, nothing is permanent. In light of the Mystic Law, this principle becomes the four virtues – eternity, happiness, true self and purity. I, my wife, my mentor and my friends – several decades from now, we will all have passed from this world. Impermanence.

First of all, as to the question of where exactly hell and the Buddha exist, one sutra states that hell exists underground, and another sutra says that the Buddha is in the west. Closer examination, however, reveals that both exist in our five-foot body. This must be true because hell is in the heart of a person who inwardly despises his father and disregards his mother. It is like the lotus seed, which contains both blossom and fruit. In the same way, the Buddha dwells within our hearts.

One of the epithets of a Buddha is, "Hero of the World." A Buddha is a valiant and noble champion who has conquered the sufferings of life in the real world. Nichiren writes: "Buddhism is like the body, and society like the shadow when the body bends, so does the shadow." People can not live apart from society. But to be constantly at the mercy of society's ups and downs is a miserable existence. It is crucial for us to be strong and wise. The "body" Nichiren refers to is, on the personal level, our faith.

In the evening, Sensei explained that the "Expedient Means" chapter of the Lotus Sutra is like a child's castle built upon sand (when compared to the true teaching hidden in the "Life Span" chapter) and clarified the benefit of the character ge of renge in terms of attaining Buddhahood. He deeply elucidated the difference between Shakyamuni's Buddhism, its history and ideas, and the Daishonin's supreme philosophy of Nam-myo-renge-kyo.

The devilish nature of authority; the impartiality of the court; the integrity of the lawyers – had better etch all these in my mind…

The Buddha has already been called a skilled physician, and the Law has been likened to good medicine and all living beings to people suffering from illness. The Buddha took the teachings that he had preached in the course of his lifetime, ground and sifted them, blended them together, and compounded an excellent medicine, the pill of the Mystic Law. Regardless of whether one understands it or not, so long as one takes the pill, can one fail to be cured of the illness of delusion?

In Nichiren Buddhism, attaining enlightenment is not about embarking on some inconceivably long journey to become a resplendent, godlike Buddha; it is about accomplishing a transformation in the depths of one's being. In other words, it is not a matter of practicing in order to scale the highest summit of enlightenment at some point in the distant future. Rather, it is a constant, moment-to-moment inner struggle between revealing our innate Dharma nature or allowing ourselves to be ruled by our fundamental darkness and delusion.

Yesterday, the retired high priest, Nissho, died. Received communication there would be an evening service for him. Sensei came directly to the head temple from Osaka, and we, from Tokyo. Severely rebuked by Sensei, who said all communication had been poor. Reflecting, I realize he was right.
The evening memorial service was held at the Renyoan at 7:00. Countless emotions. Was moved to tears watching Sensei eulogize Nissho.
…
At 11:00, the casket was removed. Can imagine what it must have been like when the Daishonin died.
Gazed upon High Priest Nissho's face one last time. Amazed at his sublime and venerable Buddha-like countenance. Returned to Tokyo with Sensei on the steam train, which left just after 3:00. In the train, received profound guidance concerning the future of the priesthood and the Gakkai.
